Police & Thieves – RIP Junior Murvin

My last couple of posts have had a social justice theme. I’ve always have a strong sense of social justice.

Today I heard that Junior Murvin had past away. RIP Mr. Murvin. Many of you may not have heard of him…and if you have, it may well have been through the Clash’s cover version of his biggest record Police & Thieves.

I can’t remember the first time I ever heard this record. Quite young. Perhaps 6 or 7, maybe smaller. However. It was one of those songs that had an immediate impact. The message of the song reflects the struggles of the times. My love of this song and its importance to me, has reinforced the importance of music and the messages contained therein. No doubt, songs such as these have had a massive impact on my sense of social justice…and my musical mojo. The unfortunate thing is…the song is still hyper-relevant.

Police & Thieves: Junior Murvin and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry

Ooh yeah

Police and thieves in the street, ooh yeah
Fighting the nation with their guns and ammunitions
Police and thieves in the streets, ooh yeah
Scaring the nation with their guns and ammunitions

From Genesis to Revelation, yeah
The next generation will be, hear me

All the crimes committed day by day
No one try to stop it, in anyway
All the peacemakers turn war officers
Hear what I say

Police and thieves in the street, ooh yeah
Fighting the nation with their guns and ammunition
Police and thieves in the street, ooh yeah
Scaring the nation with their guns and ammunitions

Oh yeah
Oh yeah

All the crimes committed in day by day
No one try to stop it, in anyway
All the peacemakers turn war officers
Hear what I say

Police and thieves in the street, ooh yeah
Fighting the nation with their guns and ammunitions
Police and thieves in the street, ooh yeah
Scaring the nation with their guns and ammunition

Police and thieves
Police, police and thieves
Police and thieves
Police, police and thieves
